Nostr relay checker:
is it up, and is it fast?
Enter any relay address. The checker connects over WebSocket from your browser, runs a real query, sends a throwaway ephemeral event to test writes, and reads the relay's NIP-11 document.
What the relay checker tests
- Connection
- Opens a WebSocket and times the TLS handshake and upgrade.
- Read
- Asks for recent notes, checks every signature and times the end of stored events.
- Write
- Signs an ephemeral event with a one time key. Relays forward but never store it.
- NIP-11
- Fetches the information document with software, limits, fees and supported NIPs.
Why a relay can look online but still fail
Some relays accept connections but reject queries, require authentication, or only accept events from paying members or followed accounts. The checker reports each step separately so you can see exactly where it breaks.
Frequently asked questions
Does the relay checker publish anything?
The write test sends an ephemeral event (kind 20000 range) signed by a random throwaway key. Relays relay these in real time but do not store them.
Why does the checker say NIP-11 is blocked?
Browsers enforce CORS. Relays that do not send CORS headers on their information document cannot be read from a web page, even when they work fine in clients.
