Are free nostr relays safe to use?
Yes. Relays only see events that are already public and signed by your key. A relay cannot post as you or change your notes. The trade off with free relays is more spam in your feed and no guarantee your notes are kept forever.
Free versus paid relays
Free relays maximise reach, since most people read from them. Paid relays charge a small fee, which keeps spam low and pays for storage. Many people write to free relays and read from one paid relay.
Frequently asked questions
Do free nostr relays keep my notes forever?
Not necessarily. Free relays may prune old events to save space. Writing to several relays protects you if one drops your data.
Why do some free relays reject my notes?
Some apply spam filters, proof of work (NIP-13) or web of trust rules. Run a live test on the relay to see whether it accepts writes from your network.
